“each piece of work is a journey through the personal, a means to identify and translate experience into an external manifestation”
Suzan Kostanich is a fibre artist based in Taranaki NZ, with over four decades of self directed experimentation and learning. Her work is primarily process driven this starts with laminating merino and kozo fibres together to produce a workable substrate. The nature of this lamination is an unpredictable process which provides Suzan with ongoing challenges in terms of the end result.
Underneath the final layers of colour , hand stitching weaves together disparate elements into subtle patterns often barely visible but an intrinsic part of her finished work, increasing the richness of the surface design. These stitches are worked intuitively as the work progresses and provide endless opportunities to develop and alter the surface along the way.
